It seems to be the topic of discussion amongst everyone these days, the rising cost of food. We at Regina Food For Learning know first hand how the rising costs can affect the quantity and quality of the food we can afford. Here are a few tips to help you stretch your food dollars.
· Plan the week’s menus by checking local flyers to determine the best buys.
· Prepare a grocery list in advance and try to stick to your list.
· NEVER shop on an empty stomach! Everything looks more appealing when your are hungry, it leads to impulse buying.
· Buy in bulk or in large quantities, particularly non-perishables and staples. Prices usually drop dramatically if you can buy a case lot, especially canned goods.
· The most expensive items are usually placed at eye level, so stoop and rise, check above and below eye level for the lower priced items.
· Cook from scratch as much as possible. Pre-made, highly processed foods are more expensive and less healthy.
· Find creative ways to use up leftovers.
· Lower the amount of meat required by making casseroles, soups, stews, or stir fries.
· Consider alternatives to meat. Legumes and pulses such as lentils, beans, seeds, nuts, and soy protein can be healthy and inexpensive choices.
